The creative set-up and background is to the author's credit. The faith stories of the likable characters was well-done. I had trouble understanding what was happening in the story for awhile and that frustrated me. Later in the book it was spelled-out. I did not like reading about the lie. It also seemed so wrong to read about the guy falling for the girl when he thinks she's married. It felt wrong to read about his winks and time spent alone with her. When her ex fiancé returned, I never understood why he left in the first place. He wanted her back, but it wasn't clear if he was repentant about his abandonment or not. Since they met on the mission field you'd think he was a person of faith too. If he was repentant, she should have taken him back and gotten counseling together with him. I think that because they had lived/slept together and she once thought she was pregnant. If that relationship was restored, then all the former happy memories she had with him could be restored, but it wasn't clear if he was waltzing back on a whim or really serious. I liked how the main characters were good people and supported each other. There was a lot of depth and consideration of why people were the way they were, and what their motives were (except the ex fiancé).

I was a bit skeptical of this book when it debuted, but after being introduced to Melissa Tagg, I wanted to read all her offerings. I clearly misjudged Made to Last.
Melissa is a pro at creating what look like simple storylines, but have unexpected layers and depth. Made to Last, on the surface, looks like what I have heard called a "liar revealed" story. There is definitely a plot centered on that, but unlike with simpler books, there is not one person who lies and one perfectly righteous person. Both Miranda and Matthew have secrets and pain, and they do the best they can with what they have. Of course, many of their choices are shady, which takes away from your respect for them at times. However, both Miranda and Matthew are drawn back toward God, which sets them on realistic spiritual trajectories.
Another of Melissa's gifts is crafting memorable scenes and side characters. Blake "Blaze" Hunziker is a likeable man, although again, some of his choices are questionable. He is well-rounded and sympathetic enough that you can tell he participates in the masquerade out of a need to help someone. Liv, Brad, Jase, and Izzy are great characters as well, and I loved all the scenes between Matt and Celine. The scene at the pumpkin farm and hay bale maze is one of my favorites.
I would have liked to see a little more of Open Arms, and a slightly deeper motivation for Matthew. I have seen the "make a questionable choice for a special needs child's sake" arc before, and it's fine. However, especially coming from a Christian book, that arc often feels schmaltzy. Additionally, I sometimes got confused about who Miranda was interacting with in a scene--Blake or Matthew--and wondered if Robbie needed to be an active character. All this said, Made to Last was a great read.
Ms. Tagg is a fresh new voice in Christian fiction with MADE TO LAST. I liked the snarky attitude that Randi sports, and the fact that Matthew is trying to do the right thing and take care of his niece who needs an expensive surgery. He doesn't want to do "celebrity blogs" but if this will pay for the surgery he will--especially since he blew his chance at a high profile political announcement.
Randi is pretending to be married, but the sparks fly between Randi and Matthew -- sort of -- there were a lot more sparks between Randi and Blaze but *that* scenerio was too cliche so (I think) the author axed the idea. Blaze would've been a much better husband--he was kind and considerate of Randi, he looked out for her and *sigh*. I loved his character. I'm looking forward to reading his story.
It bothered me that Matthew was attracted to a "married woman" even though he doesn't act on that attraction until he learns the truth (a plus). He does flirt with her behind her "husband's" back. It also bothered me that the whole premise was based on a major lie and the lies kept building. The faith message was weak. The heroine thought about going to church occasionally but that is pretty much it. (I think the point is that your identity is complete in Christ.)
However, that said, the story is fresh, the snark is top-notch, and the humor is great! 3.5 stars.
